Fishing in Fort Myers Florida is Hot, Hot, Hot!

The weather has been hot, hot, hot and so has the fishing. The weather pattern is suppose to continue for the next week with warm, clear mornings and afternoon thundershowers along with improving tides. That’s normal for this time of year and that’s what the fish seem to like. 

It is the time to get out early and get back to the dock by noon to beat the heat of the day. The tarpon bite has been great during the first part of the morning.Tarpon are all over the beaches right now and this is where he’s been spending most of my time. Look for rolling and feeding tarpon near the numerous bait schools that form off the beach in 15 to 22 feet of water. Once you locate the bait, shut your engine off and keep your eyes peeled for big flashes of silver. Drift a couple of free lined live threadfins through the bait schools and also keep a pitch rod ready to throw a bait to a roller that could pop up at any time. A great thing about this type of fishing is that you always have fresh bait near by that you can catch with a sabiki rig.

After jumping a couple of tarpon and releasing some sharks try taking that same bait and casting it along the shoreline around the area passes. You should find some very hungry snook there to greet you. By that time it will be well into the 90's and that’s time for a cold one back at the dock.

Tarpon Fishing in Fort Myers Florida

May is one of my favorite months to fish and this May is no different. Bait has been plentiful with threadfin herrings gathered up around the bridges and nearshore structure while whitebait is all over the beaches. Catch the bait and then pick your species. Sharks, tarpon and big spanish mackerel dominate the nearshore region this month. Drifting large threads in 10 to 20 feet of water can produce all three at any given time. Snook, trout and and jack crevalle will readily take the free lined white bait anywhere around the passes. Big Carlos and New Pass are loaded with all three. 

 Migrating tarpon off of the beaches are waiting to eat your free lined threadfin herring. Speckled sea trout are lining up in the passes during good moving water and will go after white bait or shrimp. Snook are standing by to attack anything that goes by them on the strong out going tides this past week. Remember, they are catch and release only right now.

Springtime fishing in Southwest Florida!

“Hooray, Spring finally made it to southwest Florida”. The bait is thick along the area beaches. Throw a 1/4 inch cast net to score big on scaled sardines. The near shore bite is a sure thing right now. Big spanish mackerel, kingfish, cobia, and others have invaded the near shore reefs. White bait on a 3/0 circle hook with a small split shot is all that is needed to get these fish to bite. If your bait can get past the top half of the water column there are grouper, snapper and trout near the bottom that will eat your bait as well. It has been a long cold winter so get out there and enjoy the warm sunshine and catch some fish!

“Bait, bait, bait.” It’s time to dust off your cast nets and get to work catching live bait along the beaches. They are currently covered with nice sized scaled sardines and a well full of them will ensure a great day of fishing. The snook are running rampant along the oyster bars and passes. Free lining the bait on a 2/0 or 3/0 circle hook is the ticket. It is all catch and release snook fishing right now but no one is complaining about getting 20 to 30 snook a day with many in or over the slot. The jacks are also busting the live bait and they are great fighters on light tackle.

Fishing in Fort Myers is heating up!

Fishing is really starting to heat up in Estero Bay and the Gulf waters thanks to warmer water temperatures and excellent spring tides. Redfish are starting to show and there have been quite a few nice snapper caught on the near shore reefs. Sheepshead are everywhere and are getting bigger and bigger thanks to the spawn. They make a great dinner and are fairly easy to catch.

Fishing is coming along and the sheepshead are in full spawn mode. They are moving from the backwaters to the nearshore reefs daily. Big sheepies to 8 pounds are being taken on the reefs and rock piles and 2 to 4 pounders are on the inside. Shrimp on a light wire hook or small jig heads have been the go-to method. Capt. Sean said that lots of trout are starting to move into the bay as well but it has been a “here today, gone tomorrow” kind of thing. Live shrimp under a popping cork seems to do the trick. Redfish are starting to show more regularly as well and fishing for them should improve as the weather warms.

Little Bit of Sunshine in Southwest Florida

Capt. Sean Davis of Fish Warrior Charters summed up the past week with one word. “Wow!” What a difference a little bit of sunshine and warmer temperatures do for fishing. He said the trout bite has really taken off and his clients are catching them to 5 pounds using live shrimp under a popping cork. The key to their success was locating large lady fish on the feed as opposed to small ladies. If his anglers were catching small ladies they’d also catch small trout. When they found the larger ladies that is where the big trout were. Good current flow was also a factor in catching these fish.

The red fish are also starting to show up in much better numbers and can be found fishing tight to the mangroves with shrimp. Capt. Sean said that the fishing should only improve as the weather heats up.

Another very chilly week on the water made fishing a bit tough but by no means did it shut off the bite.  It seems the fish have gotten use to the cooler water temperatures and have settled into a feeding pattern.  Be slow and persistent and you’ll have success with a number of species.

Capt. Sean Davis of Fish Warrior Charters said that the ladyfish have invaded the bay! Where there was once nice populations of trout there are now hoards of ladyfish. He has been working the deepest holes with shrimp on a jig head under popping corks and that has been the ticket this past week. The ladies have been so aggressive they are beating the trout to the bait.  It is all good though because the ladyfish are great sport on light tackle.  Just lighten your drags and enjoy the fight and you’ll also get your share of trout. The sheepshead are still biting well on shrimp tipped jigs.  Work the bait slowly over the bottom near mangrove cuts for success.

Fishing Report for November 25th

The fishing over the past week has been some of the best in years.  The continued warm weather has had a lot to do with the strong bite along with excellent water quality.  A cool down is forecast for next week but that shouldn’t do much to slow things down.

Capt. Sean Davis of Fish Warrior Charters reported lots of action this past week. Whether it was snook on the mangrove islands, out of season trout or a wide variety of game fish off our beaches, you pretty much had your choice of species. The beaches have an incredible amount of bait running them right now and everything is eating that bait.  On the outside there are schools of big black drum, monster bull reds, sharks, spanish mackerel and bonita.  The upcoming cold front might slow them down for a day or two, but as soon as it warms the fish should be right back in eating mode.  Capt. Sean reported a personal best while offshore with friends this week.  He boated a carbo “true black” grouper that weighed a little over 70 pounds!

Snook Fishing in Fort Myers

Capt. Sean Davis of Fish Warrior Charters just returned from a Keys vacation and reported that things on the water hadn’t changed much with his return to our area. The big school of redfish that he had been working moved on but he found another group a little further back in Estero Bay.  His charters caught nice slot fish and several oversize on whitebait suspended under popping corks. The smaller snook are still feeding near the passes and some of the larger ones have moved into the back of the bay.  Capt. Sean pointed out that the larger fish were keying on larger bait so look for bigger threadfin herring in 10 feet of water just off the beaches. The wrecks and reefs just offshore are holding jacks, ladyfish, redfish, snook, trout, and grouper.  Small white bait on light hooks and weighted with small split shot should do the trick offshore.

As we roll into the heart of the hurricane season the fishing picks up another notch.  The continuous change in barometric pressure combined with on and off rain puts gamefish in our area on the feed.  Be mindful of the weather and be safe on the water and do your best to get out there and enjoy the bite!

Capt. Sean Davis of Fish Warrior Charters reports that the redfish have finally arrived. He says that it has been a while since he’s had a fast action redfish bite but they are here now and in great numbers.  Capt. Sean reported that clients on a recent trip caught 16 reds and all were nice slot fish. They are staging on the grass flats and he recommends using pinfish under a popping cork for bait.  You can also find them near the mangroves but use free lined pinfish there for the best results. The snook and trout are also feeding well around the passes.  The snook were eating free lined whitebait and the trout are still loving the pinfish under the popping cork.  Note: Capt. Sean’s anglers got at least five inshore slams this week (redfish, snook and trout caught the same day).  It doesn’t get much better than that!

Inshore and offshore fishing were both excellent this week with many different species reported biting just about anything tossed their way.  The typical summer weather pattern combined with great tides made for some enjoyable days on the water.

Capt. Sean Davis of Fish Warrior Charters said that fishing nearshore and around the passes have been the key for his charters last week.  When the tide is higher the areas surrounding the passes have been spot on for trout, snapper and whiting. Shrimp worked best fished on the bottom for the snapper and whiting, while pinfish under a popping cork enticed the trout. The beaches surrounding Big Carlos Pass are holding  tons of whitebait and those are producing lots of spanish mackerel, mangrove snapper,  oversize snook and even some trout on the nearshore reefs.

A more normal summer weather pattern has made both inshore and offshore fishing very productive.  Bait is readily available on the flats and beaches and artificials are also working well.

Capt. Sean Davis of Fish Warrior Charters reports that both Big Carlos and New Pass are holding good amounts of mangrove snapper.  Drifting over the deepest spots using live bait with a knocker rig and a 2/0 circle hook seem to produce the most bites.  The inside beaches of both passes are holding schools of snook.  Look for them on structure  such as blown down trees or docks or in the troughs on the lower tides.  Live free lined white bait works the best.  It is also a great time of year to just enjoy our beaches. The water is very clear and the beaches are not very crowded.  Get out your mask and snorkel and look at all the fish swimming up and down the beach.  You’ll be amazed at what you might see.

Summer Fishing in Southwest Florida

Capt. Sean Davis of Fish Warrior Charters reported excellent fishing near the passes in Estero Bay on the incoming tide.  Look for birds dive bombing baits as they get swept in by in the current and then free line a nice white bait into the area and you should hook up in no time with snook, trout or jacks.  Small pinfish and even small ballyhoos have been producing as well.  The spanish mackerel are making their presence known as well all around Big Carlos Pass. Once again look for the birds to show their location and any live bait casted near them will get eaten.

The weather is hot but so is the fishing. The rising temperatures led to some nice catches in both the back country of Estero Bay and in the Gulf. With the action this hot, it should be a great time to hit the water.

Capt. Sean Davis of Fish Warrior Charters reported that the bait is still plentiful around the outside buoys and bridges. The snook are in full spawn in Big Carlos and New Pass as well as the surrounding beaches. When fishing with live white bait and circle hooks, the catch and release fun can last for hours.  30 to 40 fish a day are a definite possibility.  Most of these snook are in the 25” range but there are many big females mixed in.  If you are too hot during the day, then try night fishing on your favorite wreck or artificial reef. The mangrove snapper are coming out to eat when the sun goes down. Fish them with light leader and small hooks using cut bait or shrimp for bait and a few anglers can fill a cooler full of tasty snapper in just a few hours.

Fishing in Estero Bay

Capt. Sean Davis of Fish Warrior Charters said that the fishing this past week was spectacular.  The tides were good and the bait was plentiful all along Ft. Myers beach. His charters were catching snook along the beaches and around New Pass using free lined white bait. Along with the snook were good sized trout to 3 pounds.  Capt. Sean said that there were also lots of snook around the oyster bars on the falling tides.  In fact, there were more there then he can remember seeing in a long time.  Once the tide started falling he would start fishing the mangroves for reds using cut bait. The big story from last week was the 70 pound spotted eagle ray that jumped into his boat in New Pass  while he and a crew were filming an upcoming fishing TV show.  No one was hurt and Sean was able to get the ray out of the boat and watch it swim away.  All of this was caught on film! Summer fishing seems to have arrived.  The winds are finally starting to let down and the bait and fish are cooperating.  Daytime temperatures are hitting near 90 degrees and the Gulf water is reading in the low 80’s.  Tarpon are schooling up in the near Gulf waters and inside of Pine Island Sound and some big fish are being spotted.  Snook season just ended but the catch and release action is exploding and the redfish bite has picked up.

Capt. Sean Davis of Fish Warrior Charters said that it was great to get back on the water and run some trips after his bout with appendicitis.  He reports that the bait has been spot on and wishes to thank all those who have helped him catch it while he had light lifting orders from the doctors. Capt. Sean said that the snook are starting to more readily take to the white bait over the large threadfins.  He’s finding good numbers of fish along the beaches around Lovers Key and mixed in with the snook are some very large trout to 6 pounds.  The red fish are starting to show up in fishable numbers around mangrove islands surrounded by grass flats.  Capt. Sean recommends that you cut the tail off of live threads to go after the reds.  This will slow the bait down and also put scent in the water that the redfish can’t resist.  It also helps your bait stay in the area longer to get the strike.

On the mend in Southwest Florida

The weather took a more summer like turn this past week with warmer temperatures and a bit less wind.  The southerly flow pushed water up into Estero Bay on the afternoon high tides and that made for some great fishing in the back bays and creeks.

On a personal note... Capt. Sean Davis of Fish Warrior Charters, who reports his catches here regularly, is off the water after an appendectomy.  We wish him a speedy recovery.  Get well soon, Sean.  The snook miss you!

Capt. Rob Modys of SoulMate Charters reported a steady snook bite this week along the east wall of Estero Bay.  His catches included several slot fish along with a few oversized ones caught on large thread fin hearings.  He said it’s still tough to get bait off the beaches with the large swells but with a bit of work you can catch what you need at the bridges.  Redfish have finally started showing up in better numbers.  Capt. Rob recommends working the oyster bars in the north part of the bay with cut ladyfish or threads.  Trout are still doing well with the early bite being best.  Once the wind starts to pick up it gets harder to located them on the flats.  The surprise catch of the week was a 30 inch cobia caught in Hell Peckney Bay. 

Capt. Brad Brown of Moonlite Charters also reported a steady snook bite in Estero Bay.  His charters caught several keeper sized snook by casting large thread fins around mangrove islands and docks.  Redfish are also biting much better near the oyster bars and in the backcountry mangroves.  Jacks and ladyfish are also being caught along with sea trout on the open flats.  The most unusual catch of the week was a 24 inch barracuda caught near Mound Key.

Capt. Brett Swenson reported a solid offshore bite this week but the winds still played a part in how far out he could fish.  The spanish mackerel are showing up in pretty good numbers but the schools are small and you have to work to locate them.  Lots of bonnet head and black tip sharks can be found near the mackerel and are tons of fun on lighter tackle.  Capt. Brett said that his charters are getting good catches of pompano using small jig heads tipped with shrimp near the passes.  The catch of the week was a monster crevalle jack caught near shore on light tackle.  It took 30 minutes to land it and it was hit by a shark during the battle.

Capt. Mike Denegre of Good Time Charters said that Estero Bay produced lots of fun fishing action last week.  The improving weather got his anglers onto some great catches of snook, redfish, spotted sea trout and “tons” of snapper.  The grass flats near Mound Key produced some nice size trout caught on shrimp under popping corks.  Redfish were still a bit spread out this week but a few slot fish were caught on live shrimp and jig combos.  Capt. Mike also reported lots of whiting, ladyfish and spanish mackerel in the deeper cuts of the back bay.

Fishing in Southwest Florida this past week was good despite the ever changing weather.  The calm winds turned windy and the warmer temperatures chilled a bit.  The shift and increase in wind made for difficult live bait netting but if you were lucky enough to find some, you got on the fish.  The coming week has more wind in store but the warming water temperatures should make for excellent fishing near shore and in the back country.

Capt. Sean Davis of Fish Warrior Charters had to back up and punt this week, but he said he still managed to get on some bait and produced some nice snook and reds despite the windy weather.  Capt. Sean also worked live shrimp near the bridges and caught sheepshead, mangrove snapper and some large black drum.

Snook are migrating

Capt. Sean Davis of Fish Warrior Charters reported a great week of fishing. He said that the snook have finally started migrating to the beaches.  Lots of smaller males are going after white bait early in the morning with some huge females mixed in but the bigger fish don’t seem to be interested in the small baits.  If you can find bigger baits the fight with a big fish should be on!  With the higher tides over the past week, Capt. Sean was able to work the mangroves in the back of Estero Bay and caught snook mangrove snapper and quality redfish.

Fishing in Estero Bay

Fishing in Estero Bay and the Gulf waters off of Fort Myers Beach was on fire this past week.  The warm weather brought higher water temperatures and that put almost every species of fish on the hunt for food.  The outlook for the upcoming week is just as exciting!

Capt. Sean Davis of Fish Warrior Charters says that Spring is here!  The white bait is fairly easy to come by on the beaches around New Pass and Big Carlos Pass and there are some nice sized thread fins mixed in.   Snook, redfish and trout were the big players this past week and Capt. Sean reported he had one day with a limit of trout and redfish along with some nice snook.  The unusual catch of the week were some nice sized flounder caught near May Reef on weighted white baits.

Fishing Report by Captain Sean Davis

The weather has finally started to cooperate and the water temperatures have been steadily rising.  This has pushed lots of bait closer to the beaches with fish close behind.  The forecast for the next week is more of the same so the fishing should be red hot!

Capt. Sean Davis of Fish Warrior Charters reported a busy week.   Snook and large trout were the quarry in Estero Bay and good water flow produced numerous snook with very large trout mixed in using large white baits and thread fin herring free lined on a 2/0 circle hook  When the tides got high it was time to bang the bushes with the large baits. Chumming a likely spot was the key to success in finding snook and some huge jacks!  One of Capt. Sean’s anglers was spooled this week by a large jack, so make sure those spools are topped off.
